READY, SET, PLAY | PAMUKKALE | TURKEY
“People do no quit playing because they grow old, they grow old because they quit playing” (Oliver Wendell Holmes)
Join us at the Cotton Castle in Pamukkale, where nature has created a playground extraordinaire.
Embrace your inner child and never forget:
Let’s play. Don’t grow up.
Countless beautiful images of the Cotton Castle have always sparked our curiosity, so we couldn’t wait to finally get on the road for the 4-hour drive from Bodrum to Pamukkale through Turkey’s beautiful countryside.
But if you prefer flying instead, the closest airport is Denizli, located approximately an hour away from Pamukkale
We thought we got up early, but somehow when we saw tourbuses dropping off large clusters of travelers ready to jump into the chalk-white pools filled with hot calcium-rich mineral waters, we realized this time wasn’t early enough.
Our recommendation is to visit other sites first and come back for the travertine pools when buses start leaving again around 4:00pm.
The site remains open until 8:00pm in summer, plenty of time to make a splash, enjoy startling views and a stunning sunset.
Once we reached the top of the hill, we realized that this Unesco World Heritage Site offers much more than just the Cotton Castle.
The Roman Ruins of Hierapolis,
the Roman Theater,
the Archeological Museum
and last but not least
the Antique Cleopatra Pool.
How incredible to imagine that hundreds of years ago up to 12,000 spectators have gathered at this Roman Theater to enjoy theatrical and musical performances.
How big and majestic it all seemed and how little and lost we felt in the midst of nothing in moment in space and time.
We were so beaten from walking around the large compound, that jumping into the cool Antique Cleopatra Pool felt very refreshing.
I took a deep breath as I envisioned how Cleopatra must have felt like a million dollars every day. Imagine having a beautifully sculpted pool like this as your personal bathtub?
There were little souvenir stores and snack bars around the area and best yet, we spied deck chairs neatly places in the backyard of the pool area.
Needless to say, we took a much needed power nap, reapplied more sunscreen (white reflects!) and headed back to the Cotton Castle feeling like a million dollars ourselves.
Oh well, or half a million at least.
