100 GRAMS OF SUN | LENÇOIS MARANHENSES | BRAZIL
From cities to jungles, from beaches to deserts, Brazil offers everything the heart of a wander luster and sun seeker like us could possibly desire.
Arriving in Lençois Maranhenses after non-stop travels, we looked at the map and were stunned that we only covered 2% of this countries’ beauty at most.
But isn’t it the quality and not the quantity that counts?
Oh, and in what an exceptionally shining spot in the world we have arrived in.
Jeeps, ATVs, buggies, boats, ferries, we boarded them all to make it from Jericoacoara to the Lençois Maranhenses National Park.
For most of this journey, there weren’t actually any streets.
We recommend that you schedule your departure according to the water tide, keep your eyes on the horizon and pave your own roads.

The little town of Barreirinhas is usually a convenient hub and starting point for visitors going on day trips in the Lençois Maranhenses National Park.
As we always love to do things differently, we chose beautiful Atins as our starting point instead and simply organized our trip backwards.
It simply is priceless to wake up being the first ones leaving footprints in the sand.
“Do not go where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail” (Jean Paul)
Don’t let yourself be fooled by the sun and the masses of sand, this is not a desert, the area in fact gets quite a lot of rain from January to June (hence the lagoons!)
Best time to visit the Lençois Maranhenses National Park is from July till late September as the shimmering turquoise lagoons reach their fullest.
Wide white bedsheets for an afternoon nap? Check!
Lençois Maranhenses in Portuguese translates to bedsheets of Maranhão.
The moment you find a treasure after a long, adventurous hunt through deserts, oceans, rivers and lagoons is always priceless.
Arriving at such a simple but beautifully designed tiny tucked away home away from home, the “Oceano Casa Boutique” in Atins, was certainly one of these wonderful priceless moments.
No cell phone reception?
Try building an antenna with a metal wire and tying it with a small rubber band to your phone. If you are lucky you may be good to call home.
The only real good use you will get out of your smart phone here? Use it as a torchlight to illuminate your way, there aren’t any street lights in town.
For a Caiprinha in town we took “Broadway” (the only broader street in town barely a few steps wide) to a little shack down the road.
As one drink turned into a few more our broken Portuguese became a little less broken, and the owner deeply immersed us into the story of Atins and his family anecdotes.
The best way to learn about the history of faces and places.
Surrounded by nothing but just sun, sand and water (& each other) for miles and miles we had everything we have always wished for.
